King City Run - 2/9/02

We got lucky with a beautiful, warm, Winter Saturday in February. The plan was to gather agroup to head south from San Francisco and meet up in King City with a group coming North from Pismo. I drove down to the junction of 92 and Skyline Boulevard and waited a short time for Keith and Sarah, who were taking the loooong way to King City from Turlock.

I got my first look at Keiths sharp 69 spider with a beautiful Positano Jiallo paint job. From there we headed South on Skyline to meet up with Steve at the junction of Skyline and Route 9. Skyline is an awesome road -- nice curves, fantastic views and, this early in the morning, no CHP. Steve has a very clean, bright orange early spider.

Well, the three spiders headed down Route 9 towards Santa Cruz. 9 is a non-stop thrill ride of tight twisties. This road is something else. We all drove waaaay too fast. From SC, we headed South on Route 1 to 129 that connected us to 101. Nothing special on this stretch, but just appreciating the gorgeous views.

We met at Denny's in lovely King City. Rich made it from Visalia in his cool Dino after fixing some last minute glitches. Pismo Jack led the coupe brigade with Terry S's nice BC and Richard W. made the trip in a type of FIAT I had never seen before. Peter Cripps showed up in his coupe, after taking his own way down. After we spent some time admiring each other's cars, we had lunch. Strange, but everyone in the North group drove spiders and everyone coming from points South drove coupes, and we kept ourselves segregated during lunch.

Now it was time for the highlight of the trip. Jack had scouted out a route we could run as a group before we headed our seperate ways for home. We took off, got a few curious looks driving through downtown King City, and headed for a rolling, sweeping back road that heads between KC and Route 25. I was second in line behind Jack and, well, let me just say that I was impressed with his coupe. We hit 100 on some stretches, which is pretty fun on a tiny back road. After about 15 miles we came to Route 25 and stopped to breathe and take a photo or two. A couple of locals came out of their farm house and commented on the shiny, colorful cars.

Unfortunately it's Winter, so the days are short, and we had to split up and head for home. North on 25 is a great road, until you get to Hollister, then it's just a boring slog back up to San Francisco.
